Post-Season AC Maintenance
There are certainly some things that will need to be done by a professional AC maintenance specialist, but we’ll get to that shortly. For now there are plenty of things you can take care of all on your own, including:
- Air filter replacement. The long summer season can absolutely obliterate even a high quality air filter. Dust, dander, mold, pollen, and even more can get lodged in there, necessitating a replacement. Replacing the filter will preserve efficiency, and will also ensure your furnace starts off on the right foot once the cold starts to settle in.
- Clean up the outdoor unit. Carefully clean the fins on your outdoor unit by using a soft brush and or your garden hose. Avoid bending the fins, which can reduce efficiency and air flow. And if you do bend some fins, or there are some bent from a mishap this summer, then be sure to straighten them. Usually a butter knife or coarse metal brush can do the trick.
- Check your home vents and air return. To optimize heating air flow and ensure you don’t get too much buildup, be sure to clean your vents and air returns. It would be wise to go as far as removing the vent covers and cleaning those as well, since a lot of mess can hide on the back ends of them.
Scheduling Professional HVAC Maintenance Service
While the above tasks are certainly important, they do not replace the tune-ups, professional calibration, and cleaning of a scheduled service! Post-season professional service is ideal for both your furnace system and your air conditioner (one and the same if you happen to have a heat pump system) to simultaneously give your AC a good send-off, and to prep your furnace for the coming cold.
By getting proper service you preserve efficiency, reduce the risks of a breakdown mid-season, and ensure your air conditioner doesn’t compound any lurking issues that will suddenly rear their heads come spring 2018!
