Why Does My Thermostat Setting Matter?
Why not just leave it where it is, or just turn the thing off altogether? Both of these options seem simple enough, but the trouble is that each causes a few problems that lead to higher costs and potential risks.
Leaving the thermostat where it is doesn’t pose that much danger to your home, but you’ll not see any cost savings. Whereas if you were to kick the settings down a bit and add a couple degrees, you could see as much as 20 or 30% savings on your next bill. That savings can go right into additional fun for your vacation!
Shutting the AC off completely is an even bigger issue. First off here in South Jersey it can get quite hot, and more importantly very muggy. High heat and humidity levels in your home can endanger wood floors and furniture, mess up wall paint (and even cause permanent stains), and promote mold growth.
Additionally cooling your home back off once you get back eats up an enormous amount of power, completely obviating whatever you saved, and potentially costing you even more than just leaving the system running at full power in the first place.
Okay, So What’s the Best Setting?
The answer here is going to change a little bit for everyone. What type of system you have, what you normally keep the home running at, and whether or not you have pets will all factor into your ideal temperature. This means that while some homes are kept at 68 degrees, other homes are commonly kept at 72 or 73, and for each of you the answer is going to change.
For the safest option, we’d recommend bumping the thermostat up by three to five degrees. Each degree accounts for up to 12% less energy used by your AC, so at three to five you stand to save quite a bit, while not endangering your home, furniture, or pets.
For Superior Solutions, Go Programmable!
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a system out there that could be programmed to accommodate and protect your perfect range? Or one that could just make automatic adjustments in your home as needed, even while you were away? We’ve got some great news—you can!
Programmable thermostats are smart home tech that can help you set the perfect temp while you’re away on vacation. Not only that, many can be controlled remotely via phone apps, or can be set to learn your perfect settings all year long. That can translate to more than just savings for that week while you’re away. It can translate to savings all year long.
